The European Semester is a framework for coordinating and monitoring economic and social policies across the EU.
The SUPPORT2SME4SD third training session held on January 17, 2024, focused on key aspects of the European Semester 2024 and related policy directives. The European Semester is a framework for coordinating and monitoring economic and social policies across the EU, starting with the Commission’s priority setting in November and concluding with national budgetary plans by October of the following year. The Autumn Package initiates the annual cycle, outlining economic and social priorities, and includes several key reports such as the Annual Sustainable Growth Survey and the Joint Employment Report. Employers, coordinated by SMEunited, emphasized addressing labor and skill shortages, promoting social partner engagement in wage bargaining, and developing skills for the green transition. National social partners are encouraged to engage with the European Semester Officer and relevant ministries to influence National Reform Programmes and Country-Specific Recommendations. The training also highlighted the Pay Transparency Directive and the Commission’s recommendation for effective employment support. Active participation of social partners at both EU and national levels is crucial for the effective implementation of these policies.
